The Always Available, No Cost, Foolproof Way to Feel Happier
It’s true, there is an always available, no cost, foolproof way to feel happier.
It’s not a gimmick or an opinion.
It’s scientifically proven and validated.

The way to feel happier is to help others.
When we help someone – from visiting a housebound neighbor to helping a frenzied parent load groceries into their car to volunteering at an animal shelter adoption event – our bodies release the happy brain chemicals oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine. Together these three chemicals, often called the “Helper’s High,” create greater joy and happiness in the helper.
But wait, there’s more!
These chemicals also reduce cortisol, the stress chemical, in our bodies.
Happier and less stressed.
Humans (and many other animals, a conversation for another day) are hard wired for community. Therefore, when we act communally, our wiring triggers these chemicals.
But here are the caveats:
Helping must come from a place of genuine caring. Doing a nice deed because you are required to or for bragging rights won’t trigger the Helper’s High.
Helping others must not come with the expectation that you are owed anything in return from anyone.
The really good news (it just gets better and better) is your acts of kindness don’t have to be huge to get this happiness surge. Sincerely thanking and complimenting a helpful store employee or holding the door open for someone a few steps behind you will do the trick.
